Stadthaus Schänke is the best place in Mainz to visit for a cozy, homey atmosphere and delicious Schnitzel. It was our first day in Mainz, and we were looking forward to trying the local specialties. At the entrance, the staff was very attentive and let us know that they accept only cash. We were totally okay with that, so they seated us at a comfortable table for two in the indoor dining area. There was a cute little plant on the table along with a candle. The menu isn't very big, but there are soups, schnitzels, steaks, Schweinhaxe, and various “pfännchens” (pan-served specialties). Went here on our first day of a long trip and it turned out to be one of our favourite meals of the whole trip. Could not fault either the onion or mushroom schnitzels but the mushroom particularly was maybe the best we've ever had. Only complaint is that they are cash only but luckily we did have cash.

I thoroughly enjoyed the food at this restaurant, it was perfect for what I wanted. I was accepted without a reservation and the place seems popular with the locals. Food was prepared fast, portion sizes appealing and everything tasted great. Unfortunately I was caught out by surprise as this restaurant cannot accept credit cards foreign or domestic. They only accept domestic debit cards not even foreign debit cards. I was forced to go and withdraw cash to pay for this meal.
