No Edinburgh pub crawl is complete without a pint at The Oxford, made famous by author Ian Rankin as the local haunt of his Inspector Rebus. In a narrow laneway just behind George Street, The Oxford is a tiny pub consisting of just a small front bar (that appears to be the domain of regulars) and a little side room with bleached wooden benches and tables and old boys chatting away. With bare lightbulbs and not much décor, it has a somewhat down-at-heel feel and looks like it hasn’t changed in a long time which, I suspect, is just how the locals – including Inspector Rebus – like it! Classic old school bar with the added bonus of it's Rebus connection. Great pint and friendly barmaid. The back room's lost a bit of it's ambience due to being covered in artwork for sale that definitely doesn't fit with the location. Maybe Steve Megson could consider doing some 'Old Edinburgh' or Rebus related artwork. It'd fit in great and probably sell really well in what has to be the No. 1 destination for many Rebus fans.

I called in at The Oxford Bar on a very busy Friday evening. Scotland were playing France in the Six Nations the following day. Many French fans were enjoying mingling with locals and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The tv series "Rebus" was often filmed here, at it was the local of the shows main character. My Stewart - Pentland IPA was in great condition. I would visit again and recommend!! 🍻
