We visited The Mill House, Birtley for Sunday dinner with a booking. Unfortunately, the experience was very mixed due to front-of-house service issues, despite the food being largely excellent. After being seated, no one came over with a drinks menu or to take a drinks order. In that time, two other tables were seated, had drinks orders taken, and were served before we had any interaction. Food was lovely but staff very morose. You were almost afraid to ask for anything as they were curt and looked like you were bothering them frankly. Asked for bill to 3 different servers but never appeared. Eventually stood at the bar for 5m and were eventually asked by a lovely girl if she could help. Only pleasant member of staff we met. Shame as food was lovely and pub itself was nice. Don’t think we’ll be rushing back.

First time from the States. Thought it was great experience. Staff is friendly, but could be a little more attentive. The food really is delicious. The portion sizes are extra large. The fish and chips is like five Idaho bakers and a filet of half a fish. Recommend the fish pie, it takes a little longer but worth it. The pork chop, burger, and lamb were all good also.

Went for Sunday lunch with my family, and I have to say the lamb dinner was the best I’ve had! Staff were so friendly and attentive, a lovely ambience, with a great outdoor little area for my little boy to play whilst we waited for our sticky toffee pudding, which didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing, we will definitely be back.
