The first Barbecue Pit family restaurant opened on December 16, 1947, inside the Maryland Hotel on 6th Avenue in downtown San Diego. It was started by Joe and Lila Browning and Ed and Mella Jenson—two couples, with Lila and Mella being sisters.

Potato salad was excellent, beans were a typical smoked flavor, brisket was really good just pretty fatty.We also got 2 navy beans soups, it wasn't bad we just wouldn't order twice. It was pricey , $72 . I think next time we will go on Monday when they have specials.
