My first taste of Swabian food and a delightful place to try it at. Mattis was cozy, personable, and I felt like a family had cooked and served me. I chose the standard Maultaschen set, served with 2 dumplings, onion brew, potato and leaf salad. All in Eur16. The dumpling was nicely done and reminded me a bit of a soupy dumpling from home. I'd strongly recommend this restaurant over the other more well known but hugely commercialized competitor in Esslingen.

Both food and service were excellent. They have discounts Monday to Friday in lunch time. The place is not that big but it makes you feel very comfortable.

Another great meal. The salmon/spinach maultaschen is really good. Our server, who was new to us, was terrific! SO GOOD! This place has award winning food, and it shows. Delicious! I think it’s called ‘moutaschin’? Mine was salmon and spinach. Husband’s had tomatoes on top. So good! The dining room was crowded, but it was also cozy and friendly. The cherry/cream dessert was heavenly. An excellent end to the meal. Our server was right to recommend it. Thanks!! English menu and English-speaking server added to our comfort level. We’ll be back!

We recently made a day trip to Esslingen from Stuttgart and had lunch at Mattis on Hafenmarkt. This is a restaurant specialises in Maultaschen (filled dumplings) and other Swabian region dishes. During our lunch, we tried a seasonal special - venison maultaschen served with red cabbage and topped with berries. This was hearty and very delicious. We also tried a fried mushroom maultaschen that was pretty good as well, something vegetarian diners can opt for if wanted to try this restaurant. Service was. very friendly and timely. Environs casual, dish prices very reasonable for the portion siz
