Although the main courses were well cooked and the portions generous, I had some reservations about dinner at Retsina. Tables were very closely packed and noise levels as a result high enough to challenge conversation,the taramasalata and aubergine salad were no better than ok, and two of the three fish courses were unavailable early in the evening despite the restaurant being located opposite a fishmonger, and octopus in particular is abundant now in English waters.

It was a food & drinks event attended by about 50 invitees to celebrate a 70th birthday. Staff including George were very friendly and courteous and they were quick to find and replenish any food or drinks when the served portions are consumed. When I asked the waiter if a particular dish contained meat, rather than simply saying yes or no, the waiter went onto ask if I was a vegetarian and I told him that I am a pescatarian. I stopped by at the Retsina, a long-standing Greek restaurant in Hampstead, for an early dinner and was the first customer of the evening. As soon as I sat down, they brought over a small plate of olives and carrot sticks, which was a nice touch. I’d been looking forward to trying their famous grilled octopus, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available that day. 😭 Since I’d skipped lunch, I went all in and ordered a few dishes—taramosalata, grilled sardines, grilled prawns, and a main of grilled sea bass. Wish we’d come sooner! Best Greek food I’ve had in London. We had hummus, eggplant dip, calamari, lamb/chicken souvlaki, salad! All was delicious. Try it and you won’t regret it 🫶
