Visited Hyde Park Hotel in Leeds for lunch with my wife. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and although quiet, we stopped to sit in the sun and watch the world go by at the busy corner junction. I ordered the Barbie Chick (£12.00) – smoked chicken thigh strips with streaky bacon, sweet & sour onion, and a drizzle of sticky BBQ sauce. It was full of flavour, generous in portion, and really enjoyable. The location is also great — just a short walk from Woodhouse Moor, with plenty to see and do nearby, including browsing at North South Vintage.

I visited this pub during the England match and was genuinely shocked by the way I was treated by a member of staff. I arrived during the second half and wasn’t aware that the kitchen had already closed. While looking at the menu, I saw “Classic Smash Melt” and mistakenly thought it referred to mashed potatoes. An honest mistake. I approached the bar and was served by a young woman with a fringe who was wearing an England shirt. I politely said hello, but received no greeting back whatsoever. No smile, no hello, no acknowledgement. I then asked if I could have a side of mashed potatoes and,
