I visited Yuan while shopping around Newport and had a great experience. The standout dish was the dry-braised Oyster King mushroom, full of wok aroma, flavorful, and surprisingly more satisfying than many meat dishes. The yellow chives with squid were also excellent, with tender squid and fragrant garlic that wasn’t spicy at all. The spicy double crispy had great texture, and the bamboo shoot duck soup was comforting but more subtle. We asked for less salt, and the seasoning was adjusted perfectly. I had such a satiating meal at Yuan that I am still thinking about it days later! The mapo tofu was the highlight for me honestly—rich, deeply flavorful with the classic Sichuan heat and numbing spice. It had a good amount of intensity to it with the most tender tofu ever! Mouth-melting! The sautéed bok choy was surprisingly fab too! Simple dishes can be such a hit or a miss. This one was particularly memorable coz of the crunch and garlicky flavor. Honestly, it’s the best bok choy I have had in a while now! The hot and sour soup was nice and comforting. The servers were friendly and kind.
