I stumbled upon this place on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, almost by chance. At first, I wasn't sure if it was a restaurant for everyone. So I went in and asked. I got a lovely table by the window. The service was very friendly. I ordered a lemon and mint spritzer, a Church Burger, and a cappuccino for dessert. The spritzer took a little while, but they explained why: they'd run out of mint, and the server went around the corner to get some fresh mint. Wow. The burger arrived. So delicious. This is a kind of "love letter" to this truly exceptional restaurant and its team! I discovered it by chance about two years ago in downtown Essen. The cuisine is outstanding! You'll be surprised and delighted by a skillful blend of modern and very well-executed traditional German dishes. I don't know of any other restaurant in downtown Essen, or indeed in any of the other Ruhr area cities, where you can get such high-quality, hearty beef roulade with dumplings and a dream of dark gravy, the most tender calf's liver with apple wedges and delicate (handmade!) mashed potatoes, savoy cabbage roll
