We had 45 minutes to spare, so we decided to pop into the Royal Dick Pub for a drink. There were six of us, all adults in our 40s—not a group of noisy students or people looking to cause trouble. I ordered a cocktail and, when the bartender handed me the card machine, I explained that I was paying for the whole round and asked if he could take the orders for the other five people. From that point, his attitude completely changed. He became abrupt and unfriendly.
