Spread Bagelry on 20th has been one of my neighborhood breakfast spots since 2017, and it never disappoints. Before coming here, I’d never really experienced Montreal-style bagels, and now I absolutely love them. The wood-fired finish gives them a slightly crisp exterior while still staying chewy inside, and they’re equally great as breakfast sandwiches or with schmears. I usually order the sausage, egg, and cheese. I think the technical “standard” sandwich on the menu is bacon, egg, and cheese, but I’m a sausage guy. I've been going to Spread Bagelry for weekend bagel runs for a while and usually enjoy the experience, but unfortunately this particular visit didn’t meet expectations. I ordered a double-toasted sesame bagel with Nova salmon cream cheese along with a sea salt latte. The latte was fine, but the bagel was cold when I bit into it, which was disappointing. The atmosphere could also have been better during my visit. There was a chair placed next to a trash dumpster, and the back door was open, which made the view less pleasant while eating. I didn’t enjoy this spot for a couple reasons. Overpriced, mediocre quality and minimal effort service. I gave it shot because the reviews but disappointed overall. The bagels taste similar to a roll, no chew or pull to the outer layer. I asked for my bagel to be toasted the employee responded with they already come out hot - the bagel wasn’t even warm when I got it because they leave the front door wide open! TOO HOT! I cannot believe they have this store open in 90° weather with no air!! It’s too uncomfortable to even order my food let alone sit down and eat! It feels like you can’t even breathe — imagine how the workers must feel! I truly would not expect this from a beloved and respected local business in Rittenhouse, plz do better!
