Full disclosure: I was on my way to In-N-Out. I’ve driven past Tokyo Joe’s at least 100 times, always curious, always defaulting to a protein-style Double-Double. This time I rolled the dice and wandered in. Glad I did. Built my own bowl with grilled shrimp and took the cashier’s advice on sauces (peanut + curry). Excellent call. Deep, balanced flavor, a little heat from jalapeños, pineapple adding just enough sweet contrast, and veggies that were genuinely fresh and crisp. Protein portion felt fair, not skimpy. This place is absolutely indispensable! My son has a lot of dietary restrictions and is also a picky eater (like most young kids) so when we discovered that he not only tolerated a poke bowl full of veggies, rice, and tofu, but actually LOVED it, this instantly became a regular outing for us. We live half an hour away but make it out on a biweekly (if not weekly) basis. I try something a little different almost every time and have never been disappointed. Perfectly wedged between other favorites, I decided to try something new! Finding healthy places like this makes me feel better about when I have to eat on the road. Their ambiance and atmosphere is modern and appropriate for the cuisine. The kids meals are a perfect portion for me, as I don’t want too much, just a nice bowl amount. I got the chicken teriyaki kids bowl. The restaurant is clean, staff is friendly and the bathrooms are clean and also modern.
