I had a great experience at Nepali Chulo Restaurant in Kathmandu. I ordered the full course meal, and the servings were very generous. They even check in and ask if you’d like more, which makes it feel extra welcoming. There’s also a nightly performance, which adds a nice touch and makes the whole dining experience more entertaining and memorable. The staff are kind and generous, always attentive without being too much. They’re also flexible with the menu, so you can swap pork for non-pork options if needed. The place itself is cozy, making it easy to relax and enjoy the meal. It’s also convenient that they accept card payments. Overall, it’s a great spot if you want a filling meal with a bit of culture and atmosphere on the side.

For many of us who grew up around this area, this historic building carries deep personal memories. As children, we remember walking past it with a mix of curiosity and fear—the structure looked old, mysterious, and slightly scary. Today, returning to the same space feels profoundly nostalgic, as if the walls themselves are quietly telling stories of time gone by. This building has gracefully aged, gathering layers of history with every phase of its existence. Our fathers remember a time when this place had a copper floor and was known as the first dance club in Nepal, a landmark of modern social life in its era. Later, for many of us, it became familiar as Sunrise Boarding School, followed by Malpi Institute, shaping young minds before transforming once again. Now, it stands proudly as Nepali Chulo, a cultural, heritage-based restaurant that honors Nepal’s identity.

A charming setting in a traditional Nepali house. The building appears to have many original and historic decorations and art pieces. Complete with low tables layed out in long lines. The focal point of the main dining area is the stage because you are in for a treat on watching various cultural dances and music from the different parts of Nepal. The dancers obviously love what they do and are very skilled. Smiling and having fun with their performance, it draws in the audience and makes for a fun night to go with a lovely meal of around 7 small plates. Very tasty - Mito Chaa and nicely presented. Highly recommend this for a special evening out, good for larger groups.

We were looking for some authentic Nepali fare after a day of walking around Kathmandu Durbar. This place is one of the first few recommendations that came up on Google. 1. The restaurant was dead empty when we arrived and stayed that way throughout our meal. 2. They only had set menus available. So it doesn’t cater to a person like me who has a small appetite. 3. We ordered for a Non-veg set menu and everything on it was dry. The meat was also chewy. You’ll see it in the pictures how my partner literally left so much meat on his plate ‘cause it was so unappetizing. 4. We requested their staff for some curry/sauce to go with the meat as an exception but it was denied. 5. The food overall was really average for its price. 6. The dance performances were nice and it was comfortable to have heaters in the dining area. The servers were really courteous and polite. Overall, we didn’t really enjoy our experience much and would not recommend the place to anyone.

Terrible service, two of us had a lunch here, overpriced, just for two meal/nepali khana they nearly charge Rs. 4000. There are many restaurants in the city, thakali khana who charge 300-400 for better meals than this place. Staff, serving the meals with bare foot, rather than plating a meal in a plate from kitchen they took 10 minutes for serving just Nepali khana bringing one by one from the kitchen. I don’t know how they priced the meals. Totally, you will not get value for you money for the meal you are having here. I recommend people not to take service in This overpriced place. There are thousands of good places to have Nepali rice and curry in town. While the customer are sitting in the table staff was cutting their hand nails behind us. Was so funny.😆 Thanks Deepak
