El Cholo on Whittier is a solid spot for good Mexican food! It’s conveniently located right next to one of my favorite restaurants, Gatto (formerly Cat and the Custard), so it makes for an easy dinner choice in the area. I visited El Cholo with fairly high expectations, knowing its long history and reputation as one of the oldest Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the food itself did not quite live up to those expectations. The dishes felt overly salty, and overall, I didn’t find the flavors as enjoyable as I had hoped. El Cholo is amazing. It’s one of our favorite Mexican restaurants to go to frequently. Their enchiladas are so yummy and so are their drinks. :) They do get busy so I would make sure if you are going on a Saturday to go there a little bit earlier. The staff are super helpful though, and have a accommodated us even when we have had some picky eaters joining us. They have a good sized menu with plenty of options, so there is no need to feel like you can’t find something that you would like. Hadn't been here in years so decided to check it out. I ordered the chicken chimichangas, most everyone else in my party order the burrito plate, which was really big. Mine, however, was on the tiny side. Those chimichangas were so small they could be considered child size. And unfortunately they tasted like they were frozen then microwaved, not what I would expect considering their long time legacy. Salsa was good. Service lacked a bit.
