Great atmosphere and local charm. It was a nice restaurant to go to on a last minute road trip from Minnesota to Iowa. The place is large and welcoming. There is kitsch and very retro charming decor kind of like a pizza parlor but it's a BBQ place. I thought my bbq sampler was average. The ribs were small portions, the chicken was very moist and good but could have been more seasoned and I didn't like the homemade sausage. Hickory Park has been at 1404 S. Duff in Ames since 1970, which means it has outlasted every trend in American dining by a comfortable margin while doing nothing more complicated than smoking meat well and keeping the ice cream counter stocked. Iowa State students have been growing up with this place and then bringing their own kids back to it, which is the kind of loyalty that doesn't happen by accident.
