My friends, new to Berkeley, were telling me that they loved Italian food, so I told them that we must try Agrodolce Trattoria on Shattuck. I know that Agrodolce has roots going back to Caffe Sport in North Beach which I would go to in the 70's, and more recently Trattoria Siciliana on College which was my buddy David's favorite restaurant. We loved it! The atmosphere was great, including projecting the classic film La Dolce Vita on the wall. The food was fantastic, my Swordfish was cooked, as the menu said" perfectly! Really disappointing experience. We ordered four dishes and not a single one was done well. The tomato burrata came with completely flavorless tomatoes. The tuna carpaccio was overly salty, drowning in dressing, with wet, salty tuna and even mayo on top—which felt completely out of place. The pasta ragu had noticeable chunks of pure pork fat, which made it hard to enjoy. The campagnola pasta was swimming in sauce and, instead of pappardelle, had random pieces of spaghetti mixed in. We went on April 11 for Restaurant Week. When we asked for the Restaurant Week menu we were told they weren't doing it that night because the kitchen couldn't handle it/didn't have the ingredients. We were totally dismayed! I'd had visions of Negroni and Frittura Mista in my head all week, and my husband had been craving the full course menu w/ragout. We ended up paying much more to order fewer items off their regular menu. We heard the couple at the table next to us suffer the same fate, except the wait staff told them they could have the Restaurant Week menu "if they came back the next day".

My partner and I loved our dinner so much that I asked myself why I am not making a point of dining there at least once a month. The prices seemed relatively low, so I won't be surprised if they rise. My partner enjoyed the braised lamb and ordered a contorno to add veggies. I had the (beef, I believe) involtini. The bruschetta was excellent as was the other antipasto whose name I can't recall. (We didn't have dessert or wine). Service was by a new hire, a bit green, I think. They have outside parklet tables where I dined before and which were terrific for a quiet long conversation.
