Originally wanted to give three stars but, the more I reflect on my experience here, the weirder it seemed. Service: we were not greeted when we entered, which confused my partner and left him uncertain of where to go to ask for a seat. We also said goodbye as we left and did not get a goodbye or even a glance in return. I know it's NOT hard to look up and just say bye. The server just seemed like he did not want to be there. I don't blame him if he was tired though. Thankfully our food came quick. This was a huge benefit as the experience went on and I realized I just wanted it to be over.

We have eaten here multiple times. Tonight was a huge disappointment. The server was rude and inattentive. We wanted to order more drinks, but never did because he wouldn't come back to our table. We finally had to get up to find him and ask for service. Gyoza were the worst I have ever had. Gummy and gooey. The chicken had a good flavor, but not enough sauce. We asked for extra sauce to take with our to go meal. We were charged $1.50 for each small container and 25 cents for each to go box. I don't know that I would return.

Matsuyama in Novato was a great find during our midday pit stop on the way to Sonoma County. I had the teriyaki beef and tempura combo, and both were delicious—the beef was tender with just the right amount of sweetness, and the tempura was crispy without being too greasy. My family and nephews all enjoyed their meals, and the kids’ plates were a hit. The restaurant has a cozy, no-frills atmosphere, making it a great spot for a casual meal. We ordered a baked mussel appetizer and the chicken teriyaki mixed tempura bento box. We ordered the mussels as soon as we sat down so we would get them before the bento box. The service was a little off and I am not sure the server understood what we wanted. The miso soup and salad arrived first. The miso was delicious. The bento box arrived next. The portions were a little smaller than what I have seen at other restaurants, but flavors were good. After waiting another 10 minutes, we had to find the server and ask about the mussels.
