After a softball tournament got rained out for the day, I had the chance to walk around State College and grab lunch. Seeing the cult following and glowing reviews for Penn Steaks, I was excited to try it. I’ve eaten a lot of cheesesteaks in my life, which admittedly makes me quite particular. While the average customer clearly finds this to be a 5-star sandwich, my experience landed firmly in the 3.5-star range (rounded to 3, as it didn’t quite cross the threshold into 'exceeds expectations'). Got to meet the owner Jeff who came out and was very cool. Gave us the insight that the meat is FRESH and never frozen and it tastes like it… incredible. Chef JC whips up a mean Cheese Steak the way it should be. Get the fries… they are AMAZING! A must see if you are near Penn State! Go for it!

I love cheesesteaks when they're made correctly, and Penn Steaks got it right! Truly excellent; I wish I visited this place sooner. Super fresh rolls with the right texture that have some give, some squish, but still held up well to being stuffed with the steak, cheese, and add-ins/sauce. Also good quality ribeye steak that's well chopped. I prefer mine with provolone and sweet peppers, along with marinara on top. But honestly, these cheesesteaks are good enough with just steak and cheese. The fries here are shoestring, which is perfect if you don't want soggy fries when you let them sit. Pe

Lance and Scarlette were very welcoming and helpful. The food is excellent. The steak in the cheesesteak is very obviously high quality. The toppings all around are very good and flavorful. Bread is outstanding. Probably the best cheesesteak I've ever had in this town. Great flavors, quality ingredients, and very filling. I'll definitely be going back.
