The Flying Mango felt like one of those places where the menu keeps pulling your attention in different directions because everything sounds good. I started with smoked wings that had a nice balance of smoke and seasoning without being overwhelming. They disappeared much faster than expected. For the main meal I ordered brisket alongside mac and cheese and baked beans. The brisket was tender and the mac and cheese was rich without feeling too heavy. The baked beans added just enough sweetness to bring everything together. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It felt like a neighborhood

I wanted to like this place, I was really disappointed. Over the 5 years of living in Des Moines, Iowa we had always passed by the Flying Mango and wanted to try it. I ordered the Brisket, and goat cheese and chicken rice, nothing had any flavor, I mostly had fat on one of my briskets, I used bbq sauce on everything to elevate the dishes. The atmosphere was great, the art on the wall was cool. Flying mango needs to step it up.

Fantastic food! We visited here a couple of years ago and we had sandwiches and thought the food was fine. We are in Des Moines for the weekend and decided to eat here again. This time, we ordered other items and so glad we did! The Louisiana platter was the perfect portion and tasty! Creole chicken that was spicy delicious, andouille sausage that was roasted and so flavorful! And red beans and rice that were flavorful and not dry. The cornbread was okay but not the highlight. Went here for lunch with a coworker last week. Im bummed that I live in Omaha and can only come here sparingly when work takes me to Des Moines. Ordered the brisket bowl...Brisket was amazing; melt in your mouth unctuous. The romesco drizzle; tah dah. The pickles that were cukes less than 12 hours earlier; chef's kiss. Only reason for a 4 out of 5 on food was the rice was under and on a plate where everything else was amazing, it stood out. Will be back again, hopefully soon.
