This place just set the bar extremely high. I’m glad I did some research. The friendliness is unmatched, Gabby, Angus, and Kiv, were a blast to chat about. We learned about Edinburgh and their culture and shared plenty of laughs. And the food was without question the best I’ve had on my brief trip. After coming from London this was quite the shake up. The flavors were wonderful, everything was seasoned properly, and I thought the traditional food left the best impression. The Ballie spreads over the basements of three adjoining properties so is larger than many other local pubs. There’s a focus on good ‘pub grub’ with burgers handmade in house and seafood from Armstrong’s of Stockbridge. Sport is important too, with the six nations flags adorning the red pressed metal ceiling near the coal fire, though I'm glad TVs are generally on silent (except during important live sports matches, which are advertised in advance) so it’s easy to sit and chat at one of the wooden tables with dark red dark leather benches over a pint of cask ale. We really love this bar, it’s a bit off the beaten path from the real touristy areas, but it is a nice area and if you’re out for a walk, you should swing in. Really nice people and reasonable prices.

Fantastic service and good food. Such a lovely spot! Stopped in for lunch and honestly had the best service I’ve had in Edinburgh. My server was so kind and attentive — it just felt really welcoming and relaxed. The food was hearty and comforting (perfect for a cold, rainy day), and the place has a cozy neighborhood vibe without feeling touristy. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip — highly recommend if you want great food and genuinely good people.
