"A&W Root Beer’s got that frosty mug taste—sort of." We stopped by the A&W in Dubuque, IA after spotting the familiar orange and brown sign on our way home from a weekend trip. We wanted to see if it was as good as we remembered from childhood. This A&W is located in a lovely historic building, but it shares the space with a gas station/convenience store, so the vibe is really disjointed. We weren't sure which door to enter, you’ll find gas station coolers and displays right up to the counter, and there are two separate places to pay. Honestly, probably the best fast food experience I've ever had. We were just passing through and impulsively chose A&W. Ended up being incredibly fresh, delicious, and the staff provided quality service, all through the drive through.

My food took a long time. They were friendly and apologetic but it took forever. I went upstairs to eat -- otherwise you're at a counter in the convenience store. It's nice up there and has a really interesting view. The men's bathroom wasn't clean. All in all a mixed bag!
