Castlegate Cafe is rather small and does not have many table seatings. We went for breakfast at 10.30am and was lucky to be able to get the last table. The pastries at the front of the cafe looks really inviting. We ordered the British breakfast (£13.95) to share. It was pretty good. The avocado toast with poached eggs is good too. Their coffee is recommended. We finished off with a pistachio canoli. Personally I’d felt that it was too sweet and the canoli was too thick and hard. Otherwise a great cafe with quick and efficient service.

Situated below the big beautiful castle sits the Castlegate Café. First of all, it’s a lovely little cafe with hanging rope lights, a decorative stone wall inside, and wood floors. After enjoying many British and Scottish breakfasts on my trip, I opted for some “Sweet Pancakes”, with banana, maple syrup and Nutella. My wife ordered a morning roll with bacôn. I washed my breakfast down with a refreshing fruit smoothie, and my wife went with her usual coffee, which she said was yummy. Brilliant cafe on the Grassmarket. Ordered falafel wrap £8.95, cannoli rolled in cashew nuts, pistachio filling £2.50. The falafel came piping hot, in a fresh wrap with a choice of sauces ( opted for chilli). A delicious, satisfying healthy meal. The cannoli are small but delicious. Ordered the vanilla on a return visit and that was even better than the pistachio. Service is really welcoming and efficient. Walked by and decided to give this place a shot for breakfast. Not a ton of tables but were able to get right in. The servers were very nice. Food and drinks came out fast and everything was very good. You pay at the counter when you are done. Highly recommend.
