We were recommended The Outsider by our hotel concierge. The atmosphere is lovely here but it can be rather noisy. If you are lucky, you might get a window side table that overlooks the castle. We ordered soup of the day (£6.70) and langoustines (£23.80) to share. Both were totally delicious and bread came with the soup which I enjoyed as I love bread. The Steamed langoustines was cooked with garlic butter,white wine and served with fries. The Pan fried hake, with coconut and ginger broth and broccoli was also delicious £ 25.70. What an amazing restaurant! The inside is calm and has a rustic feel to it, with beautiful views of the castle through the window. We got the buckwheat and spinach pancakes with mushrooms and the pan fried gnocchi with roast butternut and crowdie and we both enjoyed our meals very much. The gnocchi was divine! And at such a good price under £10! We shared the chocolate pavé, which was beautiful, which came with peanut and yoghurt ice cream, which had a subtle, fresh flavour. Plating was also beautiful. we had a lovely time at the outsider last weekend - i couldn’t recommend more. mains were very cheap and the portions were actually great (for the price!!). you could totally get two mains and end up with a lot of food for the price of what would’ve been one main in similar restaurants, like we did, but honestly you could get away with only one main a person. the service was great, the place itself is very pretty, and each dish had something unique to it. really recommend the mussels and the peppercorn steak frites!!

Visited the Outsider on recommendation and had the most amazing meal, both my friend and I were absolutely smitten with our meals. Started with braised onion, shared a beautiful hake in a light curry sauce with veg and an on point steak, just perfectly done. They did our affogato with Bailey's and with a decaffeinated espresso and the service was helpful and very friendly. A perfect experience that came with a great view of Edinburgh Castle as cherry on top. Highly recommended for that special meal in Edinburgh.
