I recently took the family out for dinner at City Cafe, and it was a great experience overall. I’ve known about this place for years since I used to live off George O’Neal about 20 years ago, so it was nice finally going back. The service was excellent, honestly some of the fastest I’ve ever had. We were there around 6:30 PM, and our food came out so quickly we hadn’t even finished the appetizers yet. The food was solid across the board. I had the grilled chicken breast dinner, the mashed potatoes and green beans were really good, but the chicken itself was about a 6.5 or 7 for me. It tasted good, just not as juicy as I’ve had elsewhere. Overall, my plate was about a 7.5. Everything else really stood out. The crawfish étouffée was very good, the chargrilled oysters were on point, and the cheese sticks were phenomenal, big thick cheese log style, not the small ones. Kid-free lunch date before school pickup at City Cafe in Baton Rouge. We did the lunch special with soup and 4 chargrilled oysters. The chargrilled oysters were clean and cooked well, but a little too heavy on the lemon for me. The lunch special portion was just enough for lunch. The seafood gumbo was extremely flavorful with a nice little kick, and the shrimp & crab bisque was amazing — the kind of soup you want the recipe for. I had the NOLA fried chicken sandwich. It was good but not very flavorful on its own, so I had to doctor it up a bit. The fries were good with ranch and a drizzle of Tony’s. Our bill was about $28 per person including fountain drinks, which felt fair for what we got. We sat outside and it was packed, but service stayed friendly and fairly quick. Overall: 4/5. I’d definitely go back, especially for the gumbo and bisque.

The first time back after several years, food has degraded somewhat. The place is very neat and clean, and the service is exceptional. Large outdoor patio and full service bar if you're just in the mood for a cocktail. I had catfish atchafalya, and both the fish and etoufee were well cooked but lacking in flavor. One friend had shrimp and grits, which she said was really good. The other friend had a red drum dish with veggies and said it had no seasoning at all. I had a bowl of seafood gumbo, which was delicious. However, the char-grilled oysters we shared were just ok. Ended the meal with key lime pie, which was really good. Mixed bag at best.

City Cafe never disappoints! The cheeseburger was absolutely delicious—juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The jelly pepper shrimp was the standout dish for me. It had the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. To top it all off, the Mississippi Mud Pie was rich, decadent, and the perfect ending to an amazing meal. The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. The atmosphere was warm, comfortable, and perfect for a relaxing meal. I ordered the lunch catfish po' boy the first one the fish was cold the second one is in this picture the waitress told me they had hot fish that had just come up well the picture shows they took the fish from the one I was returning and dropped it in the grease and gave it to me. The manager was not nice at all and the third one wasn't any better
